Tafí del Valle

A green highland valley above the Tucumán forests, with a reservoir, standing stones, a Jesuit chapel and some of the best cheese in the north.

The road from San Miguel de Tucumán climbs through dense subtropical forest before opening onto the Tafí valley: wide green pastures, stone walls and a reservoir, La Angostura, ringed by mountains.

What to see

At El Mollar, the Parque de los Menhires gathers carved standing stones left by the Tafí culture, one of the earliest settled societies in the region. In town, the Jesuit chapel of La Banda is now a museum.

Food

Tafí is known for its cheese, made on farms around the valley, and for its regional empanadas. Further west, the road crosses the Abra del Infiernillo at over 3,000 metres and drops into the dry Calchaquí Valleys towards Amaicha del Valle.
